Get Your Evaporative Cooler Summer-Ready

Also known as a swamp cooler or “swampy,” evaporative coolers rely on clean water distribution and healthy filter pads to deliver optimal performance throughout the season.

Before the heat sets in, a quick pre-season check can make all the difference in performance, efficiency, and system longevity. A well-maintained evaporative cooler delivers stronger airflow, cleaner air quality, and fewer breakdowns when you need cooling the most.

Use this simple checklist to ensure your unit is inspected, cleaned, and operating at peak performance. If you need help with any of these steps, we suggest you contact your nearest qualified HVAC technician for assistance.

Pre-Season Evaporative Cooler Checklist

1. Inspect and replace filter pads
Check your filter pads for signs of wear, mineral buildup, or sagging. Replacing them ensures maximum cooling efficiency and clean airflow. Find out more >

2. Clean the water tank and drain valve
Empty and flush the water tank to remove sludge or mineral deposits. Check that the drain valve is operating correctly and replace if needed. It’s good practice to install an ‘easy dose cartridge’ to keep the water sterile and fresh.

3. Check the pump and water distribution
Make sure the pump is circulating water evenly across all pads. Replace worn pumps or blocked water distributors to prevent dry spots.

4. Inspect the fan motor and belt
Ensure the fan motor is running smoothly and belts are properly tensioned. Replace any worn belts or bearings.

5. Test the float valve and solenoid
Confirm that the float valve maintains correct water levels and that solenoids open and close properly.

6. Check electrical connections and controls
Inspect wiring, controllers, and thermostats to ensure reliable operation.

7. Run a full system test
Once maintenance is complete, power on the unit and check for proper airflow, even cooling, and smooth operation.
