What Are Filter Pads?

Filter pads (also called evaporative cooling pads) are thick, absorbent panels fitted inside an evaporative air conditioner. They hold water and allow warm air to pass through them. As the air moves through the wet pads, it is cooled and filtered before being blown into your home.

Why should you replace them?

They wear out over time – Pads break down and lose their ability to hold water.
Reduced cooling performance – Old pads don’t cool the air as effectively.
Poor air quality – Dust, dirt, and minerals build up in the pads.
Higher running costs – The unit has to work harder to achieve the same cooling.
Risk of damage – Worn pads can lead to water carryover into ductwork or electrical parts.

How often should you change Filter Pads?

For best performance, evaporative cooling pads should be replaced every few years. This depends on the type of pad, water quality, local conditions, and how often the system is used.

Woodwool vs Celdek (Chillcel) Filter Pads

The two main types of Filter Pads available in Australia are Woodwool and Celdek. Both types of pads are designed with high water-to-air contact area to promote water evaporation.

Woodwool Pads

Made from shredded wood fibres
Typically 3–5 cm thick
Common in older units
Usually last 1–2 years (depending on water quality)

Celdek / Chillcel Pads

Made from cellulose in a honeycomb structure
Higher cooling efficiency
Longer lifespan
Typically last 4–5 years (depending on water quality)
Also known as Filtercool or Ecopads
